At TailTrail Supply, we believe the right fit and proper care can make everyday adventures more comfortable for your dog. Use this guide to help choose, maintain, and safely use your dog's essentials.
Finding the Right Size
Every dog is different, even within the same breed. We recommend measuring your dog before purchasing harnesses, collars, raincoats, or other fitted accessories.
1. Measure the Chest
Using a flexible measuring tape, measure around the widest part of your dog's chest, usually just behind the front legs. Keep the tape snug without pulling it tight.
2. Measure the Neck
Measure around the area where your dog's collar normally sits. Allow enough room for comfortable movement without making the fit too loose.
3. Measure the Back Length
For raincoats and clothing, measure from the base of the neck to the base of the tail while your dog is standing naturally.
4. Check the Product Size Chart
Compare your dog's measurements with the size information on the individual product page. Sizing may vary between products, so always refer to the specific item's measurements rather than relying on breed or weight alone.
Harness & Collar Fit
- Adjust straps so the accessory fits securely without restricting movement.
- Check for rubbing around the neck, chest, and underarms.
- Make sure buckles and attachment points are properly secured before each walk.
- Inspect straps, stitching, and hardware regularly for signs of wear.
- Never leave your dog unattended while wearing equipment that could become caught on surrounding objects.
Raincoat Care
After outdoor use, remove dirt and moisture using a soft cloth. Follow the specific cleaning instructions provided with your product.
- Allow the raincoat to dry completely before storing.
- Avoid harsh detergents or bleach unless the product instructions specifically permit them.
- Check closures, straps, and reflective details regularly.
- Store in a cool, dry place away from excessive heat.
Leashes & Travel Accessories
Inspect leashes, buckles, clips, and attachment points before use. Replace any accessory showing damage or excessive wear.
For vehicle travel, use products only as directed by their manufacturers. A travel tether should not be assumed to provide crash protection unless independently verified for that purpose.
Grooming Tools
Keep grooming accessories clean and dry between uses. Follow the manufacturer's instructions for cleaning, charging, and maintenance.
When trimming or grinding nails, work gradually and avoid the sensitive quick inside the nail. If you're unsure how to groom your dog safely, consult a professional groomer or veterinarian.
Feeding Accessories
Wash food bowls and feeding accessories regularly using cleaning methods appropriate for their materials.
- Remove leftover food after feeding.
- Inspect bowls and containers for cracks or damage.
- Allow washed accessories to dry thoroughly.
- Follow product-specific instructions before using a dishwasher.
Dog Beds & Comfort Essentials
Regularly remove loose fur and debris from dog beds. Clean removable covers according to their care labels and allow all components to dry thoroughly before reuse.
